Tattoo Aftercare Guide
Now that you’ve got your fresh piece of art, let’s make sure it heals perfectly!
Your tattoo is essentially an open wound, so following proper aftercare is crucial to prevent infections and ensure the best results.
How Long Does It Take to Heal?
Most tattoos fully heal in 2 - 4 weeks, depending on your skin and how well you follow aftercare. Why is my tattoo scabby? Scabbing is completely normal and part of the healing process! It might look rough, but it’s a sign that your skin is recovering.

Immediately After Your Tattoo
Your tattoo is a fresh wound, and proper aftercare is essential for healthy healing and long-lasting results. Please follow the instructions for the type of dressing applied at your appointment.

If wrapped in cling wrap (plastic film)
-
Remove the wrap at the time advised by your tattoo artist, generally within a few hours of your appointment.
-
Wash your hands thoroughly before touching your tattoo.
-
Gently wash the tattoo with lukewarm water and mild, fragrance-free liquid soap. Use clean hands, not a sponge or washcloth.
-
Pat dry with clean, disposable paper towel. Do not rub. Allow the area to air dry briefly.
-
Apply a very thin layer of fragrance-free tattoo aftercare cream or lotion as directed. Avoid excessive moisturising.
-
Gently wash your tattoo approximately twice daily while healing, and moisturise lightly when needed.
-
Keep the tattoo uncovered in a clean environment whenever possible. Wear clean, loose-fitting clothing and avoid unnecessary friction.

If wrapped in second skin (Saniderm, or similar)
-
Follow the specific instructions provided for your dressing. Wear times vary by product and whether it is the first or a replacement application.
-
For Saniderm, the first dressing is generally worn for up to 24 hours. A correctly applied replacement may remain for another 3–5 days, according to the manufacturer's guidance.
-
Some fluid, plasma and excess ink collecting underneath the film is normal. Do not puncture or drain the dressing.
-
If the dressing leaks, loses its seal, exposes the tattoo or causes significant irritation, remove it and follow normal aftercare instructions.
-
To remove, gently stretch and peel the film back over itself under lukewarm running water. Do not pull it straight away from your skin.
-
After removal, gently wash, pat dry and continue normal tattoo aftercare until fully healed.

Important things to avoid

-
No soaking: Avoid swimming pools, baths, spas and the ocean until fully healed. Showers are fine.
-
No direct sunlight: Protect the tattoo with loose clothing while healing. Once healed, use SPF 50+ sunscreen.
-
No hot water: Use lukewarm water for washing.
-
No scratching or picking: Allow any peeling or flaking skin to come away naturally.
-
No excessive moisturising: A thin layer is enough. Avoid leaving the tattoo greasy or saturated.
-
Avoid friction and excessive sweating: Be mindful of tight clothing, strenuous exercise and anything that irritates the area.

Sleeping with a Fresh Tattoo

During the first night, your tattoo may release plasma, excess ink and small amounts of blood. Keeping it protected is important to prevent friction, irritation and contact with bedding.

If you're wearing second skin: Keep the dressing in place overnight, following your artist's instructions, as long as it remains properly sealed.

If your tattoo was covered with cling wrap: Remove the initial wrap at the recommended time, gently wash your tattoo and pat it dry. For larger tattoos or areas that are still releasing fluids, additional protection overnight may be recommended. If your artist advises rewrapping, use fresh, clean wrap for the specified period, following their hygiene instructions. Avoid prolonged or repeated wrapping without guidance.

Always sleep on clean bedsheets, wear loose, clean clothing and avoid unnecessary pressure or friction on your fresh tattoo.

Important: Never reuse cling wrap. If your tattoo sticks to your bedding, gently loosen the fabric with lukewarm water rather than pulling it away.
2 - 5 Days After Your Tattoo
-
Let your tattoo dry out, use little to no moisturizer at this stage.
-
If the dryness feels uncomfortable, apply a tiny amount of fragrance-free cream (Hustle Butter, Pawpaw, etc.).
-
Wash your tattoo once per day with unscented antibacterial soap. (I personally love the foamy one)
-
Pat dry with a clean towel, do not rub or pick at scabs!
1 - 2 Weeks After Your Tattoo
To ensure smooth healing, follow these golden rules:
🚫 No direct sun exposure (UV rays can fade and damage your fresh tattoo).
🚫 No picking or scratching (this can cause scarring and ink loss).
